Counseling Beliefs: I believe that a counselor serves as a guide, teacher, mentor, encourager, supporter, and accountability-partner. I am a supportive, solution-focused, strength-based counselor. I believe that counseling must be customized to match your needs, goals, and personal situation. I also believe that everyone will experience mental health difficulties at some point in their lives and that counseling is an amazing opportunity to grow, increase self-awareness and understanding, develop spiritually, learn healthy coping strategies, improve relationships, and create a satisfying life. I find it helpful to use a variety of counseling techniques such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Reality Therapy, Biofeedback/Relaxation Training, and Faith-Based Therapy.
I believe that a spiritual foundation in counseling can be very effective and healing for many people. I believe that many of life’s difficulties affect people physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Therefore, faith-based counseling is available upon request.
Academics & Experience: Earned a B.A. in Psychology from Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1997 Earned a M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling Psychology from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas, Texas in 2004. My thesis, “Differences Between Individuals with Dissociative Identity Disorder Based on Receipt of Government Disability Benefits,” aimed to show how a complex mental disorder could be addressed using strength-based, solution-focused, psychosocial rehabilitation modalities. I performed volunteer services with Family Services’ Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence Crisis Hotline and Response Team of Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1995 - 1996. I also volunteered at the Houston Suicide Crisis Hotline in 1998 - 1999.
